Why did god create us just for the sake of worshipping him and if we dont we are tortured for eternity?

If god is a loving god why would he do that? Why would a loving father want to torture his children by throwing them into fire? In christianity the concept of love is a big thing but then god also killed his son for our sins? why couldnt we redeem our own sins? And in the quran allah describes many different types of torture for the non believers like recreating their skins once they are burned through so they can relive the pain again and again. It just does not make sense to me.
