What are some creative materials to use for a diorama?

For school, I am supposed to make a Book Report Diorama, recreating a scene from Island of the Blue Dolphins, in a shoebox. Does anyone have any ideas for creative materials I could use for the diorama (other than the predictable clay, paint, plastic toys, magazine clippings) Thanks!
